CHAPTER NINETEEN

AUSTIN

Football practice just wrapped up for the day, but my thoughts are 100% on Lila. She’s vulnerable and hurting right now after finding out about her parents last night. I know this because she’d asked me to stay with her, so I’d held her while she cried over her dad, called and cried with her mom, and then cried herself to sleep.

I’ve wondered throughout the day if this was the secret Lila didn’t want to tell me when we were watching the game, but then I remember how broken and shocked she was after hearing the news. There’s no way she knew about the cheating or the divorce beforehand. I’m still at a loss about what that secret could be, but more than that, I’m absolutely crushed that so many things have been weighing on my munchkin’s shoulders.

All along, I thought she was just wondering about me and dealing with one other thing. Now, I’m finding out there’s more, and rather than helping her deal with her problems, I’m adding more weight to an already overfull load.

Well, that’s done. Before this day is over, she’ll know about the recruiters, and I’ll be by her side to help her deal with everything she’s going through.

“Good practice, man,” Tony says from my right.

“Yeah, you, too,” I tell him with a nod.

“Any plans tonight?” he asks.

I’m not gonna tell him about Lila’s parents’ divorce or how, because of it, I’m planning on telling her about the recruiters, so I shrug. “Nothing too exciting. You?”

He lifts his eyebrows and grins like a moron. “Date.”

“Well, that was blunt,” a familiar voice adds from somewhere farther to my right. I shift and see Shantel coming up to the two of us to thread her arm through Tony’s. “You’re supposed to be more genteel around exes, babe.”

This would surprise the daylights out of me, but Tony had come to me weeks ago to ask if I’d be okay with him dating my ex, Shantel. I was shocked to hear they were talking, let alone interested in each other, but I was quick to give my blessing. I’ve got my girl, so there’s no reason not to be okay with an ex moving on.

“Hey, he’s the one who let you go.” He drops a quick kiss on her lips. “Let me get my stuff together, and we’ll head out.”

“Sounds good,” she practically purrs.

We both watch him walk away, and then she turns back to me with her brow pinched pensively.

“Sorry,” she tells me.

“About what?” I ask through a laugh. “He’s right. I broke up with you. You don’t owe me anything.”

“Yeah,” she admits, “but you didn’t plan on me dating your best friend either. I hope it’s not too awkward. I honestly don’t want to cause friction between you two.”

“You don’t. I’m good with what I have, and I want both of you to be happy, too.”

She takes in a breath, like she’d been waiting to do that for weeks, and then reaches out to grab my forearm.
